In order to do its part in building and shaping the workforce of tomorrow, Sabre has made a strategic business decision to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives.
STEM is a significant, nation-wide initiative that promotes the increase of interest in science and technology education programs in students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The purpose is to build a future competitive workforce of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians in order to sustain our growing global economy and to meet the growing demands of the 21st century.
Sabre’s approach to supporting STEM initiatives is as follows:
- Support K-12 Programs locally – by encouraging and rewarding employee volunteerism that inspires students in the science and technology fields, and financially supporting those activities
- Participate, Engage and Discuss – by actively participating and supporting discussions with federal, state and local agencies regarding STEM related education and workforce issues
- Workforce Development – by continually training and developing our current workforce to stay abreast of the rapidly changing trends in technology

Sabre Encourages Support of STEM Efforts -
Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and workforce development programs are becoming increasingly more prevalent as our national and local economies are becoming more technical and global. Workforce development efforts are needed in both the government sectors (all levels of federal, state and local) and the private sector. Sabre believes that it is important to be involved in and promote such efforts, which serve to cultivate a competitive and successful future workforce.
For these reasons, Sabre promotes the US Naval Academy’s Summer STEM Camp, which is available to all high school students. The program is offered to rising eighth- through eleventh-graders, who demonstrate superior academic performance through grade point average (GPA), class standing and strong PSAT, SAT or ACT results. Selection is based in large part on geographic representation along with overall accomplishment in and out of the classroom.

Sabre Supports STEM Summit at APG - Sabre Systems, Inc. continues to support and promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives, which endeavor at building a competitive workforce of future scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians in order to sustain the growing global economy and to meet the growing demands of the 21st century.
With the importance of these initiatives in mind, Sabre recently supported the first Northeastern Maryland STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Summit, which was hosted by the Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG) on February 11, 2011.
The Summit, which was based upon the topics defined by the 2010 efforts, was attended by more than 96 leaders, and included representation from academia, workforce development, industry, government and professional organizations. As a result of the Summit, action committees were formed to facilitate collaborative activities in the following areas: igniting student interest in pursuing STEM, enhancing teacher knowledge regarding STEM, developing curriculum that reinforces STEM education, and the strategic communication of the process.
This Summit was the result of four working meetings in 2010, which began with Sabre hosting an industry lunch to initiate leadership of a collective effort with academia and the government. The meeting led to the development of a steering committee that would facilitate STEM education and workforce development for the local region. Sabre’s Director of S&T Partnerships, Bob Carullo, serves as secretary of this committee.
The second STEM Summit is in the planning stage, and is slated for April 28, 2011, at Cecil College.

Southeast Region Promotes STEM Efforts - Keeping with Sabre’s efforts to support schools and colleges endeavoring to cultivate interest among students in the more technical areas of study, this past summer, Southeast (SE) Region employees volunteered time and garnered financial support for local Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs.
Sabre’s efforts were focused on the Western Branch Middle School’s (Chesapeake, Va.) program and the US Naval Academy’s summer program for local youth. Although both programs evolved from different areas of the academic spectrum, the drop in elementary school through college enrollments in the technical fields have been well documented and the importance of STEM programs have begun to turn the tide with the effects resonating throughout educational institutions in every state. Although the SE Region contributions have been relatively modest, the feedback received for these efforts has been tremendously positive and has revealed a deep appreciation for the help that academic leaders feel is making an impact and will stick with the students for years to come.
